{"id":135,"date":"2014-02-10T10:38:51","date_gmt":"2014-02-10T15:38:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/?p=135"},"modified":"2017-05-21T21:53:42","modified_gmt":"2017-05-22T02:53:42","slug":"sleepingwiththeenemy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/sleepingwiththeenemy\/","title":{"rendered":"Sleeping With The Enemy: What Really Happens When You Get Intimate With Your Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A chainsaw, lightning rods and one devious plan after the other. \u00a0In my dreams, these are typical tools needed when dealing with my competitors. \u00a0<em>I&#8217;ll show\u00a0you\u00a0who&#8217;s going to get to market first with that service! \u00a0And take\u00a0that\u00a0for undercutting my price!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Outside of dreamland, I&#8217;m not so Freddie Kruger-like. \u00a0Buuuuutt&#8230;let&#8217;s just say these roots of kill-or-be-killed lie somewhere deep inside of me, as I&#8217;m sure they do with anyone who&#8217;s ever been an athlete, business owner, professional or parent.<\/p>\n<p>So, what do we do to deal with this\u00a0<em>thing?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We get to know our competitors. \u00a0We learn about what makes them tick, why they succeed and why they fail. \u00a0We know where they are in the marketplace and, most importantly, we know exactly what it is that makes\u00a0<em>us\u00a0<\/em>so different. All so we can put this feeling to rest and know we can outsmart them by knowing them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>But knowing your competition is different than\u00a0<em>knowing\u00a0<\/em>your competition.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>Have you ever\u00a0<em>talked<\/em>\u00a0to your competitors? \u00a0And no, I don&#8217;t mean your intern secret shopping them to get their pricing or you commenting on their social media posts to play nice. \u00a0I mean really\u00a0<em>talked\u00a0<\/em>to them? \u00a0Have you sat down for coffee, looked in their eyes and had a conversation with them?<\/p>\n<p>What would happen if you, you know&#8230;actually developed a friendship with them?<\/p>\n<p>Meet Jane.<\/p>\n<p>Jane runs another business membership group just like me. \u00a0Despite the handful of recommendations I received to connect with her years ago, I avoided her like I avoid folding the laundry.\u00a0 Not only was she competition, but she was competition who did what I did BIGGER, (seemingly) BETTER and for a lot LONGER. \u00a0They were the Goliath.<\/p>\n<p>Just imagine if you, the David of this story, walked into a meeting with your Jane &#8211; the Goliath: your cards held close to your chest\u00a0and your smile attempting to hide the mix of self consciousness and arrogance that scream for you to keep a healthy distance so you could win this battle!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>But then, something happens&#8230;you begin to\u00a0<em>like<\/em>\u00a0Jane. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>Like,\u00a0<em>really\u00a0<\/em>like her. \u00a0She&#8217;s funny, brilliant and endearing and you want to stay and talk with her for hours. \u00a0By the end, you are laughing together and talking openly about the commonalities of your companies. \u00a0Stories that only folks who run the same kind of business would really understand. \u00a0You realized how much you crave a peer.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there was a little fear in your belly when you ended your conversation with an invitation to mastermind together. \u00a0<em>Can you trust her? How much about your business should you divulge? Would she even want to mastermind with you? \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Without hesitation, Jane&#8217;s eyes grow wide and she yells &#8220;Yes!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Sleeping with the enemy&#8230;.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>For 3 years now, Jane and I have met regularly to discuss business issues, challenges and ideas. \u00a0In her, I have found a person with decades of experience and wisdom to share. \u00a0She&#8217;s happily handed me organizational tools that I had yet to develop, given me insight to how she&#8217;s handled challenging situations and connected me to resources that would be completely unavailable for anyone not affiliated with the Goliath group.<\/p>\n<p>In me, she has found someone with a fresh approach to the way things have always been done. \u00a0I&#8217;ve helped her see new ways of providing services, suggested unique ways for approaching her board and given her advice on the digital revolution.<\/p>\n<p>And the best part? She&#8217;s become a very dear friend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>C&#8217;mon, Katie. This is a special scenario. This can&#8217;t be the norm.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>But that&#8217;s the whole point: it\u00a0<em>can<\/em>\u00a0be the norm. \u00a0You absolutely\u00a0<em>can<\/em><em><\/em>\u00a0meet with all your competitors and start the conversation. \u00a0It&#8217;s all up to your attitude and your intuition. \u00a0As you meet with your competitors, are you going to sit down with some jerks who make your stomach knot? Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Are you going to meet with people who promise a lot, but never follow through? \u00a0Yes. \u00a0And you&#8217;re smart to follow your gut and stay as tight-lipped about your company as you feel you should. \u00a0But I believe these folks are overshadowed by your competitors who are good people, passionate about what they do and simply want to do better.<\/p>\n<p>When you see your competitors as potential collaborators, a whole new world of business opens up. \u00a0When you live with the belief that there is<em>\u00a0<\/em>plenty of business to go around, suddenly those enemies turn into resources that can explode with&#8230;well, with whatever you want them to explode with: introductions to the exact right people, new business, advice that saves you time and money.<\/p>\n<p>What about you? \u00a0What experiences have you had with your competitors?
