{"id":2362,"date":"2015-04-21T14:46:14","date_gmt":"2015-04-21T19:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/?p=2362"},"modified":"2017-05-21T21:52:41","modified_gmt":"2017-05-22T02:52:41","slug":"downloadnumbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/downloadnumbers\/","title":{"rendered":"A Day in the Life of a Podcaster: The Truth About Download Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cHow many downloads did you get today?\u201d my husband asked me last night.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d \u00a0I responded with a stiff jaw, determined not to look annoyed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later, he asked again. \u00a0\u201cSo, how many downloads did you get?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know&#8230;stop asking me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t you want to tell me your download numbers?\u201d he begged.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I sighed heavily. \u00a0Did I really want to tell him the real reason why? \u00a0\u2018I\u2019m too busy\u2019 and \u2018I\u2019ll check later\u2019 aren\u2019t working anymore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the last thing I need is for you to compare your numbers to mine and then I feel like crap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And there you have it&#8230;a perfect example of how, even between a husband and wife who have two completely different podcasts, <b>comparing download numbers<\/b> becomes emotionally charged. \u00a0You can imagine how heavy this comparison game can feel amongst thousands and thousands of podcasters!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>There are two options in the podcasting world when it comes to downloads: you can either reveal all and show the world your hand or you can remain silent about them.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>The former is usually chosen by those who have big numbers. \u00a0I often see graphics from podcasters celebrating that they crested over 100,000 downloads or 1 million downloads. \u00a0And this makes total sense. \u00a0When I reach 1 million downloads, you bet your ass I\u2019ll be screaming it from the mountain tops! \u00a0Wouldn\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latter option is reserved for the other part of the population&#8230;the majority of podcasters, by the way&#8230;those who <i>don\u2019t <\/i>have 1 million downloads. \u00a0Those who don\u2019t get 10,000 downloads per episode.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is not a philosophical discussion. \u00a0I\u2019m not going to make an argument that \u201cnumbers don\u2019t really matter.\u201d \u00a0And I\u2019m not going to try to shed light on why you should be killing yourself to get more downloads as fast as you can so you can \u2018really matter.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>All I\u2019m going to do is share my numbers with you for the sole purpose of you using this information to make sense of your own numbers and what they mean to you. <\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with a few basics:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 102, 0);\"><b>What is a \u201cdownload?\u201d <\/b><\/span>\u00a0A download is counted every time someone presses play on an episode. \u00a0Whether someone listens for 10 seconds or 30 minutes, it counts as 1 download.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 102, 0);\"><b>Why are download numbers important?<\/b> <\/span>If you look at podcasting as a game, download numbers are one tool you can use to keep score and let you know where you stand. \u00a0It\u2019s a way you can rate yourself on the important things you want to know as the host of your show. \u00a0<i>Is anyone listening? \u00a0Do people like my show? Am I growing my audience? \u00a0Did people like today\u2019s guest\/topic?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note that the answers to these questions are not definitively determined by your download numbers. \u00a0Just because 300 downloads are showing for the day doesn\u2019t mean 300 people listened. \u00a0It simply means 300 people pressed play. \u00a0Just because one episode skyrocketed past your prior episodes doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that your listeners loved that guest\/topic. \u00a0It could mean that someone of influence shared your episode and many other people saw that share and pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The download numbers are simply one element that you can mix into the equation to help you better understand your show. <\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>NOTABLE DOWNLOAD MOMENTS FOR BIZ WOMEN ROCK<\/b><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\"><b>New &amp; Noteworthy<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first 8 weeks you launch your show, iTunes gives you a little bump. \u00a0The New &amp; Noteworthy section is specifically for new shows so they can get prime real estate within iTunes and be introduced to an audience who might love them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When I first launched the Biz Women Rock podcast, my team and I had a very clear strategy. \u00a0Our goal was to be on the New &amp; Noteworthy section of iTunes as often and as high on the list as we possibly could. \u00a0We knew that the algorithm to make N&amp;N was determined by 1) the number of downloads you received, 2) the number of subscribes to your show and 3) the number of ratings and reviews you received.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Without going into our entire launch strategy here, I\u2019ll simply say that my team hustled like crazy to acquire as many of all three of these things as possible. \u00a0Therefore, Biz Women Rock was consistently in the top of the New &amp; Noteworthy section for two months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During my time on New &amp; Noteworthy, Biz Women Rock had a total of <b>16,095<\/b> downloads&#8230;an average of <b>1,788<\/b> downloads per week and <b>255<\/b> downloads per day. \u00a0More than that, I had received about <b>140<\/b> reviews<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\"><b>New &amp; Noteworthy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">16,095 total<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">1,788 weekly<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">255 daily<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">140 reviews<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2363\" src=\"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-14-at-5.57.47-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-04-14 at 5.57.47 PM\" width=\"510\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-14-at-5.57.47-PM.png 856w, http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-14-at-5.57.47-PM-800x538.png 800w, http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-14-at-5.57.47-PM-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\"><b><i>My Emotional State<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>16,000 downloads is pretty respectable, right? \u00a0I was super proud of these numbers, especially because we had executed our strategy so beautifully! \u00a0(I\u2019ll share our entire New &amp; Noteworthy strategy in another post soon and I have no doubt you\u2019ll laugh at some of the ways we asked people to review!).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But just when I was patting myself on the back a few weeks into N&amp;N, I saw Chris Cerrone, a fellow podcaster who had launched his show <i>The Cerrone Show<\/i> at the same time I did, announce that he had hit 100,000 downloads. \u00a0<i>Are you freakin\u2019 kidding me!?<\/i> \u00a0(sidenote: his show is good and filled with personality&#8230;check it out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cerroneshow.com\/\">here<\/a>!).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I felt like a loser. \u00a0Like a complete failure. \u00a0<i>Why wasn\u2019t I getting those kinds of numbers? \u00a0What is he doing that I\u2019m not? \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I started looking at the podcasters who were killing it, those who were getting thousands of downloads per show out of the gate. \u00a0I observed what they were doing. \u00a0And I tried many of those things. \u00a0Some worked, some didn\u2019t. \u00a0Some are great ideas that I still need to try.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I decided to look at my numbers as NUMBERS and not let it <i>mean<\/i> something about me. \u00a0I decided to use the numbers as a tool to guide my next moves, to see what was working and what wasn\u2019t. \u00a0I decided to stop feeling so competitive with my fellow podcasters and just concentrate on my listeners! \u00a0Not the fact that I was exhausted and having a really difficult time keeping up with the schedule. \u00a0Because <b><i>I was terrified it would dramatically decrease my download numbers.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But exhaustion overruled and thank god it did. \u00a0Pulling back one show each week gave me so much more time to focus on building my community, writing great emails and producing a better show.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But it did decrease my download numbers. \u00a0Just a bit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From launch date to schedule change, I had a total of <b>73,138 downloads<\/b> over 8 months, an average of about <b>9,100 downloads per month. \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the time I went to 2 shows per week till present moment, I\u2019ve had a total of <b>36,073 downloads <\/b>in 6 months, an average of about <b>6,000 downloads per month. \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Which makes sense. \u00a0I went from releasing 12 shows per month to 8 shows per month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Did this kill my show? \u00a0Absolutely not!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>THE TOTALS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As of the date of this post, the Biz Women Rock podcast has a total of 110,397 downloads (please let it be noted that I made sure to refresh Libsyn just before I got that number&#8230;just in case there were any more since 10 minutes ago! \u00a0Ha!). \u00a0That\u2019s an average of 7,885 downloads per month and an average of 677 downloads per show (I have 163 shows as of today).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">110,397 total<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7,885 per month<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">677 per show<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2371\" src=\"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-21-at-2.57.21-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-04-21 at 2.57.21 PM\" width=\"552\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-21-at-2.57.21-PM.png 875w, http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-21-at-2.57.21-PM-800x530.png 800w, http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-21-at-2.57.21-PM-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First off, let me say there are a dozen other ways you could analyze your numbers that would give you different vantage points of your listeners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When all is said and done, numbers mean nothing and they mean everything. \u00a0They are an incredible tool to tell me some things I want to know about my listeners. \u00a0Yet if I dare to take them too seriously, to take them too personally, (whether they\u2019re big numbers or small numbers), I run the risk of letting them rule my actions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a pregnant woman, I can equate it to my weight. \u00a0I don\u2019t regularly check my weight, but when I see my midwives, I do&#8230;just so I have one more piece of data to let me know I\u2019m having a healthy pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>WHAT REALLY MATTERS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every savvy podcaster will tell you the same thing: what <i>really <\/i>matters is the engagement of your listeners. \u00a0Are you getting emails from people listening to your show?
