You don\u2019t hear celebrity women talk candidly about money very often. So when I read\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s comedy roundtable<\/a>\u00a0and heard women like Amy Schumer (MY GIRL CRUSH) and Lena Dunham, among other popular TV stars right now talking about money and how they are dealing with it, I knew I had to share it with the Lucky Bee community.
\nIt\u2019s IMPORTANT for us to talk honestly about money. To normalize what it\u2019s like to have money (the pros and cons). Otherwise, we\u2019re only hearing and seeing extreme versions of rich women.The only time I hear famous women talk about money is on the Real Housewives of Whatever \u2013 and the Kardashians. \u00a0ALL of those experiences are valid \u2013 but, this feels more real and relatable.<\/p>\n

There are famous, accomplished women out there earning money who have conflicting feelings about it \u2013 just like you and me. Who struggle with self worth. They\u2019re just doing it in a more public arena.<\/p>\n

This interview covers topics like sexism in Hollywood \u2013 definitely read it in full \u2013 but here are the most interesting money highlights:<\/p>\n

Another ugly side of the business that was revealed in the Sony hack\u00a0<\/strong>was the pay disparity between male and female executives and talent. What\u2019s the biggest fight you\u2019ve had about money?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ELLIE KEMPER<\/strong> I\u2019m not powerful enough to have that fight.<\/p>\n

KATE MCKINNON<\/strong> I\u2019ll work for a hamburger.<\/p>\n

You really feel like that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

MCKINNON<\/strong> I just want to be onstage. And I want a hamburger.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is fascinating right? Because how often do we hear women in business say things like \u201cI\u2019m not here to make money. I just want to help people!\u201d.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

We just want to be in the game. To be \u201con stage\u201d. The \u201chamburger\u201d (ie. money) feels like a bonus.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s fascinating right? Because so many of us have something amazing to \u201csell\u201d but we get blocked. We freak out that it\u2019s Mercury Retrograde, or that we\u2019re charging too much. (I talked about this on stage in London \u2013 this video is going viral<\/a>)<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s the interesting thing. You totally SHOULD be in a business that you love so much that you\u2019d do it for free. But the most powerful thing happens when you love it and actually don\u2019t<\/em> do it for free. That\u2019s the sweet spot.<\/p>\n

What are you \u201cworth\u201d?<\/h2>\n

Whatever you want. There is a sweet spot because what you can offer and what the market is looking for. But it\u2019s more flexible than you think it is.<\/p>\n

Even Lena Dunham who is the boss of her own show is probably underpaid.<\/p>\n

LENA DUNHAM<\/strong> [Lean In<\/em> author] Sheryl Sandberg once asked me, \u201cDo you know what you make compared to men who run an HBO show?\u201d and I was like, \u201cWhy would I ever ask about that? I can pay for dog food, and I have an apartment.\u201d I hear my boyfriend [musician Jack Antonoff] on the phone all the time saying, \u201cI\u2019m worth more than that.\u201d I do not have that skill.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And here\u2019s the thing. You finally get to the place where you do what you love and you get paid for it. But maybe you hit an income plateau<\/a> and you think, \u201cWell \u2013 too much more would be unseemly<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

You fought for more money for a stand-up gig?<\/strong><\/p>\n

AMY SCHUMER\u00a0<\/strong>A couple years ago, I heard how much Floyd Mayweather charged for fights. \u00a0Yeah. I\u2019m like, \u201cThese people are only going to be there because of me, so I\u2019m not crazy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And that\u2019s why you should never compare your prices to other people in your industry. People want YOU. If they are price comparison shopping, then you don\u2019t want them for your customers because there will always be someone willing to do it cheaper.<\/p>\n

If Amy Schumer comes to my town, I will pay her prices. I\u2019m not going to look around and go, \u201cHow can I get this same experience cheaper?\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

What are you \u201callowed\u201d to charge?<\/h2>\n

But nobody is going to give you permission to charge good prices<\/a>. YOU have to set it. And that\u2019s the bad side of having your own business. Nobody can tell you what to charge. And that\u2019s the awesome thing about your own business \u2013 you don\u2019t have to ask your boss for more money!<\/p>\n

KEMPER<\/strong> I once heard an exec say, \u201cIf you don\u2019t ask for it, we can\u2019t give it to you.\u201d We can\u2019t go through our lives just being grateful for everything.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Everyone is going to have an opinion on if you\u2019re worth it!<\/strong><\/p>\n

But it will mostly come from you, and your fears about it. Who cares what other people think.<\/p>\n

DUNHAM<\/strong> When it was leaked how much I was getting for my book [a reported $3.7 million for Not That Kind of Girl<\/em>], there were 39,000 articles asking, \u201cIs she worth it?\u201d Then it came out what [comedian] Aziz Ansari was making on his book [a reported $3.5 million]. No one says a goddamn word.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What kind of rich woman do you want to be?<\/h2>\n

Do you worry that money will change you? Turn you into a diva or a spoilt brat. Maybe it will, but if you have good friends and family around you, you\u2019ll probably self correct before anything bad happens!<\/p>\n

But you\u2019re also allowed to be ANY kind of rich woman you want<\/a>. You can wear flip-flops or\u00a0louboutins. There\u2019s no right or wrong. Money is neutral. It\u2019s us to attribute morality to it.<\/p>\n

TRACEE ELLIS ROSS<\/strong> I was raised by a woman [singer Diana Ross] who has high standards for what she\u2019s worth, which has been called \u201cdiva behavior.\u201d I have witnessed flagrant, disgusting behavior, and that is not <\/em>my mother. There is a way to be a woman, ask for what we deserve and be able to negotiate.<\/p>\n

SCHUMER<\/strong>\u00a0I did recently go on my first private jet. I caught myself before saying, \u201cWe need a bigger jet.\u201d Three years ago, I\u2019m begging for half-off potato skins, and now I\u2019m like, \u201cThis jet is wack.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But seriously \u2013 how refreshing is it hearing about this?!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
