The Grammy Award-winning pop siren snoozes more than half the day away for one reason and one reason only: so she can hit her ear-piercingly high high notes. Apparently it works, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/gossip\/la-et-mg-mariah-carey-misses-high-notes-tour-nick-cannon-cheating-20141006-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">mostly<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve got to sleep 15 hours to sing the way I want to,\u201d she once <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/celebrity-sleep-secrets-what-stars-do-in-bed\/8\/\" target=\"_blank\">told <em>Interview<\/em><\/a> magazine. Call it crazy. We call it career insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Carey is far from the only famous personality to keep <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/11\/04\/celebrity-sleep_n_1571780.html\" target=\"_blank\">strange<\/a> sleep habits. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/249009\">Donald Trump<\/a> sleeps to the opposite extreme &#8212; hardly at all. The bedhead-defying billionaire real estate mogul eeks by on just three to four hours of zzzs a night. \u201cThe Donald\u201d says it lends him a competitive edge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the luminaries who fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to their sleep habits and nighttime routines &#8212; people who tuck in a little more like us. Some celebrities sleep a full eight.\u00a0Others scrape by on what little they can, depending on the day\u2019s workload and what\u2019s on the docket for tomorrow. One thing the rich and famous generally have in common is that we love to voyeuristically follow the days and nights of their lives, right down to how and when they hit the pillow (and, you betcha, who with).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a revealing glimpse into the bedtime routines of four of today\u2019s most successful people. Go ahead and pry. You know you want to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"slides\">1. Elon Musk<\/h2>\n<div class=\"hero\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"slide\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/slideshow\/20150807193431-elon-musk-tesla-cars.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"credit\">Image credit: Helga Esteb | Shutterstock<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/246054\">real-life inspiration for Tony Stark<\/a> in Jon Favreau\u2019s <em>Iron Man<\/em> movies purposely doesn\u2019t indulge in too much caffeine before lights out, something he admits he used to do to his own detriment. The billionaire\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla-motors-ceo-discusses-bedtime-routine-eating-habits-work-schedule-oh-much-video\/\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>\u00a0he\u00a0once\u00a0guzzled up to eight cans of Diet Coke every day, on top of his customary two cups of coffee. He stopped when he realized\u00a0he was getting \u201creally wired.\u201d\u00a0Now he drinks \u201cprobably one or two [Diet Cokes], so it\u2019s not too crazy.\u201d Steering clear of the buzzy stuff for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/244079\">six hours<\/a> before tucking in is best.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, the visionary founder of both Tesla Motors and SpaceX, is a lifelong night owl, typically turning in around 1 a.m., then usually rising again at 7 a.m. During a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/IAmA\/comments\/2rgsan\/i_am_elon_musk_ceocto_of_a_rocket_company_ama\/\">Reddit AMA<\/a>, the 44-year-old original PayPal mafia member\u00a0revealed that he tracked how long he sleeps\u00a0&#8212; six to six-and-a-half hours, on average &#8212; with his phone, a device never far from his workaholic grasp. So much for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/245326\">not taking tech<\/a> to bed with you to bed, rocket man. Arianna Huffington, next up on this list, wouldn\u2019t approve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"slides\">2. Arianna Huffington<\/h2>\n<div class=\"hero\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"slide\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/slideshow\/20150807193513-arianna-huffington-post-newspaper.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"credit\">Image credit: drserg | Shutterstock<\/div>\n<p>Arianna Huffington collapsed from exhaustion in 2007, two years after launching the Huffington Post. One night, after staying up late to catch up on work, she fell to the floor, smacked her skull on the way down and came to in a pool of blood. Involuntarily keeling over was a \u201clife-changing\u201d wake-up call, she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.people.com\/article\/arianna-huffington-collapse-wake-up-call-thrive-book\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>. She had no choice but to quit working 18-hour days and skimping on sleep.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek-American media mogul is now an outspoken advocate for \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inc.com\/arianna-huffington\/sleep-your-way-to-the-top.html\" target=\"_blank\">sleeping your way to the top<\/a>.\u201d And by that she means logging eight restorative, uninterrupted hours of shut-eye per night, which\u00a0she strives to do every day. The recovering workaholic also bans all electronics from her bedroom, eliminating the temptation to zone out on social media and to check work emails (and stay awake stressing out over them). &#8220;I only have real books by my bed,\u201d she told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2013\/06\/arianna-huffington-implores-you-stop-taking-bright-devices-into-the-bedroom\/277269\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Atlantic<\/em><\/a>. \u201cNot even Kindle editions. No iPad. Nothing. It&#8217;s incontrovertible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Want to snooze like Huffington? The billionaire Microsoft co-founder makes a point of reading nightly, pouring over everything from inspiring biographies (Warren Buffett, Franklin D. Roosevelt) and exhaustive history tomes (about the development of\u00a0vaccines and the atomic bomb),\u00a0to deep philosophical dives and intellectual periodicals (<em>The Economist<\/em>, <em>Scientific American<\/em>). \u201cI read an hour almost every night,\u201d he told <a href=\"http:\/\/community.seattletimes.nwsource.com\/archive\/?date=19900731&amp;slug=1085429\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Seattle Times<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s part of falling asleep.\u201d But sometimes reading keeps him awake, too. \u201cLike anyone who loves books, if you get into a good book, it\u2019s hard to go to sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 59-year-old college drop-out finds seven hours to be the best amount of sleep for optimal creativity the following day, also reports the<em>Times.<\/em> \u201cEven though it\u2019s fun to stay up all night, maybe taking a red-eye flight, if I have to be creative I need seven hours.
