According to a 2011 article\u00a0in the Harvard Business Review,\u00a0many women do not speak up or feel confident at work, leading them to be\u00a0passed over for potential\u00a0promotions and raises.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Heath, one of the article&#8217;s authors\u00a0and managing partner at the consulting firm\u00a0Flynn Heath Holt Leadership, says this insecurity could stem from\u00a0a\u00a0<a class=\"\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/blogs\/outside-voices-careers\/2014\/08\/07\/7-ways-women-can-build-confidence-at-work\" href=\"http:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/blogs\/outside-voices-careers\/2014\/08\/07\/7-ways-women-can-build-confidence-at-work\">lack of female colleagues or bosses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you are the only woman in the room, it is hard to be confident,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>Michele Gelfand, psychology\u00a0professor at\u00a0the University of Maryland\u200b, suggests the discomfort women feel when \u200bnegotiating for higher salaries and promotions\u00a0in their careers occurs because they are trained to be nonconfrontational. It&#8217;s not enough for women to <a class=\"\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/blogs\/outside-voices-careers\/2015\/03\/02\/are-you-too-good-at-your-job\" href=\"http:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/blogs\/outside-voices-careers\/2015\/03\/02\/are-you-too-good-at-your-job\">simply be good at their job<\/a>, she says \u2013 standing up for themselves is\u00a0also\u00a0key to becoming the boss. \u200b<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-2\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-2 ndn_embedded\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90080\" data-config-site-section=\"ndn1_usnews\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\">\u00a0&#8220;Even if you are working hard and doing well, you really need to be stepping up to the plate and asking for things,&#8221; Gelfand says.<\/div>\n<p>Here are eight pieces of career advice for young women who want to beat the boys and become the boss:\u200b \u200b<\/p>\n<p><b>Promote yourself.<\/b>\u00a0Although self-promotion is a key step for women who want to get noticed in the workplace, many of them feel uncomfortable speaking out about their accomplishments.\u00a0\u200b<br \/>\n\u200b \u200b<br \/>\n&#8220;[In]\u200b their early life, girls have been rewarded for following the rules and not speaking out,&#8221; says Jane Finette, founder and executive coach at The Coaching Fellowship, a coaching center for young women leaders. &#8220;It&#8217;s just not something girls have been trained to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Working hard at your\u00a0\u200bjob isn&#8217;t enough\u00a0to\u00a0get noticed, \u200bsays Peggy Klaus, author of &#8220;Brag!: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn Without Blowing It.&#8221;\u00a0Young women should take initiative and tell their colleagues and bosses about tasks\u00a0they&#8217;re working on, upcoming projects, obstacles they have overcome and their overall value in the organization, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u200b&#8221;You really do need to let your boss, your boss&#8217;s boss\u00a0[and] your colleagues know what it is that you are doing,&#8221; Klaus says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Promoting their achievements and using assertive language will help women move up in the workplace.
