{"id":3332,"date":"2015-10-28T14:47:41","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T19:47:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/?p=3332"},"modified":"2015-10-28T14:47:41","modified_gmt":"2015-10-28T19:47:41","slug":"elizabeth-holmes-on-using-business-to-change-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/elizabeth-holmes-on-using-business-to-change-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Elizabeth Holmes On Using Business To Change The World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By:\u00a0<a class=\"link ng-binding\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sarahhedgecock\/\" target=\"_self\">Sarah Hedgecock<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the thing you love, and that you\u2019re so incredibly passionate about that if you got fired you\u2019d still want to do it?\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/elizabeth-holmes\/\" target=\"_self\">Elizabeth Holmes<\/a> asked a room of 1,500 people on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>She was speaking at this year\u2019s Forbes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/under30summit\/\" target=\"_self\">Under 30 Summit<\/a> in Philadelphia, accepting the Under 30 Doers Award for her work trying to make expensive lab tests \u2014 and, possibly more importantly, test results \u2014 accessible to everyone.\u00a0\u201dWe believe that transparency empowers the individual and empowering the individual will change the system,\u201d she explained in an interview with Forbes senior editor Matthew Herper.<\/p>\n<p>Holmes, 31, ranked #121 on the Forbes 400 list this year and is the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world. She\u00a0made her fortune through her company, Theranos, which produces blood tests\u00a0that can allegedly test for multiple diseases using a fraction of the blood required by more standard tests. It also sells them at at a lower cost: Theranos has over 200 tests priced under $10.<\/p>\n<p>Holmes didn\u2019t always know her calling was in\u00a0blood tests. Her father worked for USAID, and she says watching him and his colleagues growing up made her realize she wanted to change people\u2019s lives.
