{"id":3417,"date":"2015-11-16T12:52:28","date_gmt":"2015-11-16T17:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/?p=3417"},"modified":"2015-11-16T12:52:28","modified_gmt":"2015-11-16T17:52:28","slug":"women-gear-up-for-decade-of-female-entrepreneurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bizwomenrock.com\/beta\/women-gear-up-for-decade-of-female-entrepreneurs\/","title":{"rendered":"Women gear up for \u2018decade of female entrepreneurs\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By:\u00a0KRISTY DORSEY<\/p>\n<p>THE role of women in busin\u00adess creation is set to come under the spotlight this week as the co-founder of Scotland\u2019s leading support network for start-ups has predicted the onset of \u201cthe decade of the female entrepreneur\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy-Rose Walker, chief sol\u00adutions officer at Entrepreneurial Spark (ESpark), said women are increasingly looking to strike out on their own, though many are driven by different factors than their male counterparts.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"pullquote-0\" class=\"pullquote article__pullquote\">\n<h2 class=\"pullquote__quote\">Women have the confidence to go on and set up their own business<\/h2>\n<p><cite class=\"pullquote__cite\">Lucy-Rose Walker<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But despite differing motivations between the genders, their needs remain much the same. \u201cWomen now have the confidence to go on and set up their own business, whereas some years ago that was potentially not the case,\u201d Walker told <em>Scotland on Sunday<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn entrepreneur is an entrepreneur \u2013 they have a certain mindset, even if they\u2019ve come to it through different circumstances \u2013 and now we have a lot of female role models out there as well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboola-mobile-mid-article-text-links-title\" class=\"taboola-right-rail__title\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"taboola-mobile-mid-article-text-links\" class=\"taboola\">\u00a0\u201cWe believe that we are moving into the decade of the fem\u00adale entrepreneur.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>Tom\u00adorrow marks the start of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the world\u2019s largest campaign to promote the work of those who create small but growing companies.<\/p>\n<p>Female participation comes into specific focus on Thursday, which is Women\u2019s Entrepreneurship Day. There are almost one million small and medium-sized firms led by women in the United Kingdom, but government officials estimate that number would double if women set up businesses at the same rate as men. According to a survey of 500 fledgling entrepreneurs carried out by OnePoll, women are less driven to start a business by wanting to be their own boss. Less than half cited this when asked, versus 60 per cent of men.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 17 per cent of women said they had struck out on their own because of a change in lifestyle. For men, the ratio was just 6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeing here is that it often comes down to the circumstances that women find themselves in,\u201d Walker said. \u201cPerhaps they have moved somewhere new, or they have had children, and they are looking to create work that fits around that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Women starting up on their own are more likely to feel isolated than their male counterparts, perhaps explaining why they are also more likely to seek a mentor.<\/p>\n<p>Start-up incubators promote the benefits of working alongside other like-minded individuals, which in the case of ESpark means taking up temporary residence in one of seven \u201chatcheries\u201d located across the UK.
