I&#8217;m constantly searching for the qualities that make someone a success.\u00a0Does athletic success translate to success in business?\u00a0Can someone with little to no business experience become a successful entrepreneur? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spartan.com\/en\/media\/podcast\/episodes?article=733\" target=\"_blank\">I talked to Nicole<\/a>, founder of the popular women\u2019s athletic clothing line Skirt Sports, to solve this mystery. She was a professional triathlete and won an Ironman, but her whole life changed when she started her own business. And the skirt fit.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what she had to say about starting a business from nothing but a great idea:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Just get it done.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nicole was training one winter and ran past her reflection in a window. She realized how uninspired she was by the way she dressed while exercising. \u201cI had an epiphany run,\u201d she told me,\u00a0\u201cwhich, I think happens to a lot of people\u2014they just don\u2019t do anything about it.\u201d But Nicole did do something about it. She immediately went home and started brainstorming in her journal.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole said, \u201cI wrote the word \u2018pretty\u2019 and thought: I want to start a women\u2019s clothing line that\u2019s sassy. Something totally different.\u201d Not long after, Nicole had a prototype made for a running skirt. She wore the prototype when she competed in an Ironman in 2004, and the rest was history. \u201cI heard the crowd shouting, \u2018It\u2019s the skirt!\u2019 as I passed. I won the race: my one and only Ironman.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Keep focused: No junk miles.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nicole brainstorms in a unique way. She writes down a lot of ideas, and then narrows it all down to one. For example, she knew she wanted to start a women\u2019s clothing line that made women feel good about themselves, but her idea was too broad. \u201cMy husband brought me back to reality,\u201d she says. \u201cHe said, &#8216;I think you should focus on that one thing in that little scribbled notebook of yours that really epitomizes the concept.&#8217; So I said, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s a skirt!\u2019 No one\u2019s ever done it before.\u201d The idea of eliminating \u201cjunk miles\u201d is an important one. It is the difference between success and failure. To succeed, you need to block out all the noise.
