Drew Barrymore<\/a> is at peace with the fact that women can\u2019t \u201chave it all\u2014at least not in the same moment.\u201d That\u2019s a statement with the potential to ruffle some feathers. \u201cI get in trouble for saying you have to make choices and therefore you may not get to do everything you want,\u201d she says. Barrymore\u2019s not suggesting that women can\u2019t achieve both\u00a0their career and personal ambitions\u2014in fact, that\u2019s exactly what she\u2019s\u00a0done since she was a teenager\u2014she\u2019s just a realist about the fact that life can get\u00a0chaotic and complicated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never hit the pillow thinking, \u2018Yup, did it all today,\u2019\u201d\u00a0says Barrymore. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, phew! I think people at work don\u2019t hate me today and my kids are feeling like Mom was there and this is good\u2019\u2026. It\u2019s a hot mess and I need to make the best of it that\u2019s possible!\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore does seem to be doing it all though with her impressive list of job titles. Mother.<\/em> (She has two daughters, Olive and Frankie.) Entertainment mogul.<\/em> (She was cast in her first film at 5-years-old, and has been a household name to Americans for decades thanks to her work as an actress, director, and producer.) Entrepreneur.<\/em> (She founded the company Flower Beauty, an affordable line of cosmetics, as well as a production company called Flower Films, and she\u2019s a partner in Barrymore Wines.) Barrymore recently addedauthor<\/em> to that list with the release of Wildflower<\/em>, a collection of humorous and thoughtful first-person essays that recount a life in the public eye that\u2019s been anything but ordinary.<\/p>\n

\u00a0But it\u2019s in navigating the intense, often-competing demands of work and family that Barrymore\u2019s life now resembles one that many women can relate to. Bouncing between the must-do\u2019s at work and making sure she\u2019s spending quality time with her daughters, Barrymore faces a daily routine that\u2019s more of a triage situation than a balancing act\u2014which doesn\u2019t leave time for much else. \u201cThere\u2019s your marriage. There are your friendships. There\u2019s, God forbid, yourself for a minute. If I go do something for myself, even a workout, I feel so guilty,\u201d Barrymore admits. \u201cI don\u2019t know what the answers are. In my life, I never feel like, \u2018I\u2019m doing it all, having it, feeling good about it.<\/a><\/span> \u2019\u201d<\/div>\n
