Female entrepreneurs changing the face of business

Written by:

Female entrepreneurs are changing the face of America’s, and South Carolina’s, economies.

In the 1970s, women owned fewer than five percent of small businesses in the U.S.

Today, they own about 50 percent — and that percentage continues to grow rapidly.

In South Carolina, women own about 100,000 small businesses, or more than one of every four in the state, according to TD Bank, citing U.S. Census Bureau data.

Jeni Kleckley, owner of Monkee’s of the West End, and Kristy Young, owner of the Bella Bridesmaids on Augusta Street, are part of the entrepreneurial growth trend.  Both in their 30s, the franchise owners have a keen eye for not only profitability but sustainability.

Kleckley moved into an owner’s role after managing the boutique clothing and accessories store. Young, who has an auditing background, opted to join the excitement of planning weddings with a selection of designer bridesmaids dresses.

Each says that while women entrepreneurs continue to take ownership, challenges remain.

More men than women tend to have management experience and confidence in growing their businesses, according to a recent TD Bank survey of small business owners. On the other hand, women are more likely to participate in their communities and to ask for — and listen to — advice.
