Don’t Let Others’ Experiences Dictate Yours

Don’t Let Others’ Experience Dictate Yours

When my husband and I found out we were pregnant with our sweet Savannah, a lot of people shared their advice and stories with us about what was about to come, especially as it related to Sedona (our 3 year old) and her little sister.

“Just prepare yourself because Sedona will regress in some way.  It always happens.”

“Sedona’s going to be jealous for a bit, but she’ll come around!”

“They’ll be best friends!  But it’s going to be rough for awhile.”

And you know what?  It legitimately got me a little worried about adding our new girl to our family.  I came up with all kinds of strategies to mitigate any possible regressions, jealousy or tensions there might be.

  • I made sure to get presents for Sedona that would be from her baby sister.
  • I asked for advice in mommy groups on how to handle adding another one.
  • I made sure to get the potty training done well before Savannah came, hoping that this wouldn’t be the area of regression.

And then, when we were about 2 months away from our due date, I had a realization…

Why am I going to let others’ experiences dictate what mine is going to be?

Just because something is true for other people does NOT mean it has to be true for you!

So, I decided to shift my energy from worry to creation.

Instead of preparing for what could happen, I got busy envisioning what I wanted to happen.

  • I journaled about how easy and seamless our transition into a family of 4 would be.
  • I meditated on visions of Sedona stepping into her role as big sister beautifully from the start
  • I talked to my husband about how wonderful it was going to be to watch our girls be best friends

And guess what happened?

Sedona has not regressed.  She has not lashed out. She has not shown any signs of jealousy.

Instead, she has embodied what I envisioned…

You can see for yourself in this adorable video 🙂

Why am I telling you this story?

Because it mimics exactly what we can allow ourselves to believe in our businesses!

How many times have others told you about their experiences, ultimately telling you what you can expect?

It’s not malicious or negative on their part…it’s our human nature to share our experiences and to project it onto others (just ask any first time pregnant woman who immediately is told birth stories from every mom she encounters!).  It’s how we feel connected.

BUT…that doesn’t mean you have to accept it.

If you’ve heard things like…

You’re going to have to work crazy hours to be successful!

Getting clients is hard and it’s going to take a long time!

Marketing is a pain in the ass and you just need to outsource it.

Hiring help is hard and you’re going to have to go through a lot of horrible people before you find the diamond in the rough.

You can’t make good money unless you have digital products that “make you money while you sleep!”

…then you’ve experienced exactly what I’m talking about.

My challenge to you is this…

Instead of automatically taking on others’ experiences, stop and do things that allow you to create your own!

Here are 3 simple things you can do RIGHT NOW to create your own business success story:

  • Journal about what you DO want.  I have a gazillion ways I do this, but two ideas are:

      1. Writing into the future: Pick a date in the near or far future and write about what happened between now and then as if it’s that day.  “It’s May 30th, 2019 and I’m so excited that…”
      2. Affirmations: My favorite to write lately is, “I’m so grateful for ____________ and I’m ready to receive more of it!”

  • Meditate: Whether you’re simply setting your timer for 10 minutes and closing your eyes and breathing or listening to a guided meditation, meditating is an amazing way to practice separating your thoughts from you…which leaves room for you to listen and see visions that you may not hear or see when your mind is busy with thoughts.  (PS: You can check out a slew of free meditation that I created just for you on the Meditation for Women podcast here!  My favorite one lately is Wake Up and Shine: A Daily Morning Meditation.)

  • Talk About What You Want: I would only do this with trusted people in your life like your business coach, biz bestie, spouse or close friend.  Because “going against the grain” of what people are telling you is going to happen or common rhetoric takes a belief in manifesting what you want, a belief in designing your own life…and that needs to be cherished, loved and nourished.  Talking about it makes it real and totally doable!

Only YOU are the one who gets to decide what your business success (and your life) looks like!

Love,

Katie
